it is pretty exciting to note that we have seven, that’s right, SEVEN gigs between now and our break for August. Check out the new CALENDAR page (top of the home screen) and the updated GIG page for more details. Make a note of them and hopefully you will be able to joins us for some (or all!) of the performances.
After last night’s session I am really happy how well the songs are coming together for Tealbeck (next week!) and the York Ukulele Festival. I will have more travel information for you next week about getting to York (we need to be at the side of the stage in St Samson’s Sq for 15:45.
it is recorded in a slower time so you can play along. it’s pretty funny. i think it will really work and i was so impressed with how people gave it a try last night. tab playing can be tricky, but like everything – you just need to practise!
it is my vision for OUO that we do something fun, unique, interesting and AWESOME! variety is key to this i think and i love your suggestions for songs.
keep practising and see you next monday for TEALBECK!
we’ll meet at the Woolpack between 6pm-6.20pm, walk down together and be back for the York practise at 7.30pm. Please also note i have booked us a rehearsal at the Woolpack on FRIDAY 14th JUNE 7pm for a run through of the York set (which you will not have to pay a sub for!) 🙂
any queries please get in touch….until then my friends, ta ra!
it was great to be back after our 2 week break, i have really missed our monday night sessions so was glad to be reunited with my ukulele buddies! the woolpack all-stars gig was a great success so thank you everyone who played or supported us. There are DVDs available of the evening for £5 – email firstname.lastname@example.org for more details. we have definitely progressed as a group since our last gig so all that hard work really paid off!
so last night we had an action packed 2 hours with some new songs and we worked on more finger-picking too.
Why this song?? well – i like to respond to requests as much as i can and the beauty of our group is that musical taste is so wide and varied. i have discovered so much music since starting the OUO than i ever would have. i am really grateful for it and i know there is so much more to find out about yet!
I also thought this could work well in our own style so thought about a fingerpicking verse contrasted with a heavier chorus. anyway – have a listen to the MP3 demo i have done and play along using the sheet music. fingerpicking is a great skill to master and we know it can work well in a performance setting so keep at it!
keep Sunday 28th April free (11am-11.30am) as we will be performing under the Buttercross in Otley whilst the farmers market is on. it’s a family fun day so should be a good one (hope it really is spring by then!)
we have barely had time to put our ukulele’s away before we’re getting them out again at the moment….which is the way we like it!
we enjoyed 2 outings this weekend just gone.. i was so chuffed to see how many of the orchestra turned up to play at the otley victorian fayre/woolpack open day. we had a wonderful afternoon showing people around the woolpack and we packed out the room with our christmassy sing along. it also sounded amazing to have the otley a cappella choir sing with us too. i hope we can do much more of that in the future!
as well as some of our classics (and jingle bells!)
but the work didn’t stop there! oh no. i made everyone who stayed for the second session on monday rattle through at break neck speed some of the other songs we will be playing at our next 2 performances.
i really hope to see great crowds for these…..
15th december 5pm-7pm – we will be entertaining the christmas shoppers at the sela bar (new briggate, leeds) . we are so excited to play here. it’s my favourite bar in leeds and have seen so many great gigs here so i am so proud to be performing with my ukulele buddies on the sela stage!
17th december 7.30pm-10.30pm – the woolpack end of term show. we will performing at the courthouse, otley, along with the otley a cappella choir and the young people who come to our activities and projects. it’s going to be an incredible evening. and for only £3 in (if you’re not performing!) you do NOT want to miss this!
dates are already rolling in for 2013….it is going to be our year!
don’t forget – we are playing for the residents at teal beck next monday (10th december). meet at the woolpack for 6pm or see you at teal beck for 6.30pm. then we will come back to the woolpack for a quick run through the christmassy songs….and maybe a mince pie!
last night was brilliant and listening back to the rehearsal really made me hear how far we have come in this short time.
2013 will be our year – lots of fun together, lots of playing, singing, gigs and who knows….maybe even an ALBUM!!!!
one of the things i wanted for our orchestra when it started was to do songs we all know and love that you might not a) expect to hear on a ukulele or b) have the guts to perform if it was just yourself on say a guitar or playing the piano. but there are so many great songs in the world – and some of the ones we have picked to work on as a group just make me smile from ear to ear as soon as we start playing them. i hope it has the same effect for people listening too!
of course we have been looking at our christmas songs over the past couple of weeks so thought i would just do the shortcuts to the music here so if you missed the session you can catch up.
i never go on about the junior OUO but i should do more….and i will. i thought you would like to know what they are getting up to these days!
the suggestion this week was GET BACK by the beatles and of course i was happy to oblige! i love that THEY love the beatles almost as much as me!! i am really looking forward to going through all the parts together on saturday morning (we now meet at 9am on saturdays during the school term).
in other news i was happy to accompany a friend who was buying a ukulele today. we had a great road trip to HOBGOBLIN in leeds. http://www.hobgoblin.com/shops/leeds/ YOU HAVE TO GO THERE IF YOU WANT TO BUY A UKE! and take me with you!! they have some incredible ukuleles for sale and the staff were so helpful and happy for us to try (nearly all of them) out. i loved the carvalho portuguese ukes but will have to save up a bit first!!
AND don’t forget our gig this saturday….really hope to see a lovely crowd there singing along with us. the old cock, otley 6.30pm….BE THERE!
