and then we started work on these new ones… i hope you’ll agree that they sounded awesome already – and i am hoping over the next couple of weeks we will all feel confident to play them in front of an audience (or 3) !
it is pretty exciting to note that we have seven, that’s right, SEVEN gigs between now and our break for August. Check out the new CALENDAR page (top of the home screen) and the updated GIG page for more details. Make a note of them and hopefully you will be able to joins us for some (or all!) of the performances.
After last night’s session I am really happy how well the songs are coming together for Tealbeck (next week!) and the York Ukulele Festival. I will have more travel information for you next week about getting to York (we need to be at the side of the stage in St Samson’s Sq for 15:45.
it is recorded in a slower time so you can play along. it’s pretty funny. i think it will really work and i was so impressed with how people gave it a try last night. tab playing can be tricky, but like everything – you just need to practise!
it is my vision for OUO that we do something fun, unique, interesting and AWESOME! variety is key to this i think and i love your suggestions for songs.
keep practising and see you next monday for TEALBECK!
we’ll meet at the Woolpack between 6pm-6.20pm, walk down together and be back for the York practise at 7.30pm. Please also note i have booked us a rehearsal at the Woolpack on FRIDAY 14th JUNE 7pm for a run through of the York set (which you will not have to pay a sub for!) 🙂
any queries please get in touch….until then my friends, ta ra!
it was great to be back after our 2 week break, i have really missed our monday night sessions so was glad to be reunited with my ukulele buddies! the woolpack all-stars gig was a great success so thank you everyone who played or supported us. There are DVDs available of the evening for £5 – email email@example.com for more details. we have definitely progressed as a group since our last gig so all that hard work really paid off!
so last night we had an action packed 2 hours with some new songs and we worked on more finger-picking too.
Why this song?? well – i like to respond to requests as much as i can and the beauty of our group is that musical taste is so wide and varied. i have discovered so much music since starting the OUO than i ever would have. i am really grateful for it and i know there is so much more to find out about yet!
I also thought this could work well in our own style so thought about a fingerpicking verse contrasted with a heavier chorus. anyway – have a listen to the MP3 demo i have done and play along using the sheet music. fingerpicking is a great skill to master and we know it can work well in a performance setting so keep at it!
keep Sunday 28th April free (11am-11.30am) as we will be performing under the Buttercross in Otley whilst the farmers market is on. it’s a family fun day so should be a good one (hope it really is spring by then!)
In our first session last night (which is suitable for learners, enthusiasts and anyone who wants to have a sing and some fun!) we covered the following songs, which you can click on to see the PDF of the music!
FROM ME TO YOU – new song! we will be looking at this in more detail next week!
in the second session, we devoted the time to 2 new songs. the song choices have been inspired by orchestra members and arranged with performances in mind so have some nice picking parts as well as strumming. in one hour we really got to terms with the songs and feedback was excellent; it is always a nerve-wracking moment when i present i new song to the group!
i will post audio/video of these asap so you can have a listen and play along at home! so more on these next week!
on a little aside – if you would like to take part in a performance in the next few months (dates are coming in!) then i would love for us all to wear an OUO emblazoned top! please bring a blue (any plain blue) top that can be printed on along to the next session so i can get you logoed up!!
i think we broke the record last night for how many ukuleleists (yes that is a real word!) we can fit in the woolpack! we were bursting at the seams for the first session, which was awesome. the sound we made was pretty incredible.
it was especially good to meet some new players and hope that they enjoyed the session as much as me.
in the second session we focussed on the set list for the up and coming gig in bramley. i am really excited about the gig because we are playing in a church and have been assured that the acoustics are wonderful….it will be lovely to get a chance to perform some songs we haven’t aired in public for a while
i will post a video tutorial unchained melody as the finger-picking techniques can be difficult to master at first. but bear with it. it already sounds so lovely and dream like. all it takes is practise.
so more next week. at least one new love themed one coming up…our post-ouo gig pint at the old cock (best pub in otley) always results in some excellent song suggestions and musical revelations!
remember the junior ouo will be meeting for the first time this year this saturday (12th jan) at 9am. we have extended the session to an hour now…so we can really cram the new songs in!
