Well, as lovely as my summer was (rock school – running it, not participating in it! – lots of walks, reading about Elvis, listening to new music and the odd half down the pub) it was brilliant to see lots of friendly faces again at The Woolpack for our first session since July.
I was really excited to bring some new songs to the group… I hope you will enjoy them as much as me.
Here is the run down of what we covered last night
I have also recorded the following demos to help people practise – i hope you find them useful! 🙂
– Jumpin’ Jack Flash (with vocals)
– Jumpin’ Jack Flash (no vocals)
– Reet Petite (demo)
– Redemption Song
We have lots of exciting things in store for OUO between now and Christmas… I have done a little calendar so you can have a look at the important dates. The most important one for now being OTLEY FOLK FESTIVAL! We will be playing twice on Saturday 21st Sept (5pm at The Woolpack and 7pm at the Rigby Club) hope you can make it! We will be covering the songs at the next two 8pm sessions so please come to the sessions if you would like to play on stage with us!
seriously…..this was happening when i left the house! (it could almost be the chevin?!)
every week i am bowled over by the commitment, determination and hard work all the players put in to the OUO, not only in regards to their playing but also in actually dragging themselves out of the house on a stormy monday evening in january. much much respect! we did lots of playing in both sessions and looked at more tab playing and some strumming techniques too – so we made loads of progress!
of course we are gearing up for the next gig (9th FEBRUARY – BRAMLEY TRINITY METHODIST CHAPEL, 2.30PM!) so we looked at the following songs over the 2 sessions…
i think we broke the record last night for how many ukuleleists (yes that is a real word!) we can fit in the woolpack! we were bursting at the seams for the first session, which was awesome. the sound we made was pretty incredible.
it was especially good to meet some new players and hope that they enjoyed the session as much as me.
in the second session we focussed on the set list for the up and coming gig in bramley. i am really excited about the gig because we are playing in a church and have been assured that the acoustics are wonderful….it will be lovely to get a chance to perform some songs we haven’t aired in public for a while
i will post a video tutorial unchained melody as the finger-picking techniques can be difficult to master at first. but bear with it. it already sounds so lovely and dream like. all it takes is practise.
so more next week. at least one new love themed one coming up…our post-ouo gig pint at the old cock (best pub in otley) always results in some excellent song suggestions and musical revelations!
remember the junior ouo will be meeting for the first time this year this saturday (12th jan) at 9am. we have extended the session to an hour now…so we can really cram the new songs in!
i don’t know about anyone else but i thought that was a pretty intense (but awesome as always!) ukulele session this evening! we rattled through the songs and there was a lot to take in with the new chords, new songs and then in the second session, preparing for the gig on friday!
we spent some time tonight in the first session looking at a couple of newies…..
in the second session we concentrated on the songs for friday. we are really excited about playing at the otley beer festival – hopefully there will be some samples left for us when we have finished 😀 !
we will be meeting and having a run through some of the songs at the woolpack 6pm-6.45pm (if you can make it) then walking to the rugby club for 7pm. on stage between 8pm and 8.30pm and we will play about an hour. please make sure you are at the rugby club for 8pm AT THE LATEST. if you have your OUO t-shirt then please wear that if not then something blue/white on the top half would be cool.
i can’t wait for FRIDAY!
final thought for the day…… F#dim! my new favourite chord!
i have to admit that i expected a quieter than normal session last night….but as it turns out it wasn’t just me who would rather play the ukulele in the warm than stand in the cold and coo at fireworks. that said – i at least wanted a sparkler so we marked the half way point in the forecourt at the woolpack with sparklers for all! it was fun and no one burnt any fingers so we could crack on with some playing for the last hour!
we covered lots of songs yesterday including 2 newies –
HOUND DOG – elvis presley. everyone attempted the riff too and it sounded so cool!!
MAMMA MIA – we looked at this in the second session as it has a few riff sections to it (MAMMA MIA TAB) but by the end of the evening it sounded really good….i wondered how well abba would go down but it’s a great pop tune with a catchy melody and nice chord changes – it was bound to sound even better played by us! 😉
we also looked at these songs throughout the session
