We’re back! WOO HOO!

Well, as lovely as my summer was (rock school – running it, not participating in it! – lots of walks, reading about Elvis, listening to new music and the odd half down the pub) it was brilliant to see lots of friendly faces again at The Woolpack for our first session since July.

I was really excited to bring some new songs to the group… I hope you will enjoy them as much as me.

Here is the run down of what we covered last night

SESSION 1 7pm-8pm

5022508287443 (can’t resist a classic Elvis shot!)

SESSION 2 8pm-9pm

Jumping Jack Flash TAB OUO

I have also recorded the following demos to help people practise – i hope you find them useful! 🙂

– Jumpin’ Jack Flash (with vocals)

– Jumpin’ Jack Flash (no vocals)

– Reet Petite (demo)

– Redemption Song

We have lots of exciting things in store for OUO between now and Christmas… I have done a little calendar so you can have a look at the important dates. The most important one for now being OTLEY FOLK FESTIVAL! We will be playing twice on Saturday 21st Sept (5pm at The Woolpack and 7pm at the Rigby Club) hope you can make it! We will be covering the songs at the next two 8pm sessions so please come to the sessions if you would like to play on stage with us!

Until next week my ukulele buddies! happy strumming!

even the thunder and lightening didn’t put us off!

seriously…..this was happening when i left the house! (it could almost be the chevin?!)

every week i am bowled over by the commitment, determination and hard work all the players put in to the OUO, not only in regards to their playing but also in actually dragging themselves out of the house on a stormy monday evening in january. much much respect! we did lots of playing in both sessions and looked at more tab playing and some strumming techniques too – so we made loads of progress!

of course we are gearing up for the next gig (9th FEBRUARY – BRAMLEY TRINITY METHODIST CHAPEL, 2.30PM!) so we looked at the following songs over the 2 sessions…

LA BAMBA chords and lyrics LA BAMBA – tab – get practising your espanol!

DON’T YOU WANT ME – tab DON’T YOU WANT ME chords+lyrics

LOVE ME TENDER – keep practising the chorus especially

Cecilia – watch the timing on the ‘up in my bed-room’ bit!

Stand By Me (sibelius tab) STAND BY ME – everyone to play riff a or riff b in the intro

I’m a Believer – TAB I’m a Believer

it’s now or never CHORDS and LYRICS pdf It’s Now or Never NOTATION and TAB

so that means we have a few songs to look at in next week’s session which we will be playing in bramley so i hope you can make it next monday from 6.30pm.

here is the set list for the gig ouo 09.02.13 set list see what you reckon…we have done so many songs!

ta ta for now my lovely strummers!

14th January 2013 – a new OUO record!

i think we broke the record last night for how many ukuleleists (yes that is a real word!) we can fit in the woolpack! we were bursting at the seams for the first session, which was awesome. the sound we made was pretty incredible.

it was especially good to meet some new players and hope that they enjoyed the session as much as me.

we played these songs….

Whole Lotta Shakin Goin On   Whole Lotta Shakin Goin Lead

You Are My Sunshine

in the second session we focussed on the set list for the up and coming gig in bramley. i am really excited about the gig because we are playing in a church and have been assured that the acoustics are wonderful….it will be lovely to get a chance to perform some songs we haven’t aired in public for a while

unchained melody finger picking UNCHAINED MELODY

Stand By Me (sibelius tab) STAND BY ME

it’s now or never CHORDS and LYRICS pdf

It’s Now or Never NOTATION and TAB

tune in for more next week…..we will be looking at 2 new songs in the second session next week so keep practising in the meantime!

new songs, new chords and new techniques for the new year!

i have to tell you i am pretty excited about 2013 for the otley ukulele orchestra.

especially if tonight is anything to go by! it was lovely to welcome so many new faces and all the familiar ones that have become the highlight of my week. mondays totally rock.

so in the first hour this evening we looked at a few songs focussed on the holy trinity of ukulele chords, C, F and G.

a few oldies

You Are My Sunshine

and a newie (you all know by now how i love 1950s rock and roll)

Whole Lotta Shakin Goin On

Whole Lotta Shakin Goin Lead

this is a great tune as it is a 12 bar blues – the ‘lead’ part really adds that classic line to complete the rock n roll feel.

FOXY LADY – this also sounded AWESOME! you never thought it would sound awesome on a uke but believe brothers and sisters…it truly does

then in the second session (and thinking about our next valentines themed performance) we looked at these new ones…

unchained melody finger picking

i will post a video tutorial unchained melody as the finger-picking techniques can be difficult to master at first. but bear with it. it already sounds so lovely and dream like. all it takes is practise.

so more next week. at least one new love themed one coming up…our post-ouo gig pint at the old cock (best pub in otley) always results in some excellent song suggestions and musical revelations!

remember the junior ouo will be meeting for the first time this year this saturday (12th jan) at 9am. we have extended the session to an hour now…so we can really cram the new songs in!

see ya!

what’s your favourite…..?!

i don’t know about anyone else but i thought that was a pretty intense (but awesome as always!) ukulele session this evening! we rattled through the songs and there was a lot to take in with the new chords, new songs and then in the second session, preparing for the gig on friday!

we spent some time tonight in the first session looking at a couple of newies…..

WE’LL MEET AGAIN – some lovely chord changes although some new ones to learn

BLUE CHRISTMAS – first christmas song of the season!

and we also revisited HOUND DOG from last week, then EIGHT DAYS A WEEK and I’m a Believer

in the second session we concentrated on the songs for friday. we are really excited about playing at the otley beer festival – hopefully there will be some samples left for us when we have finished 😀 !

check out the SET LIST FOR FRIDAY 16th NOVEMBER and download/email me if you need any info or print outs etc.

we will be meeting and having a run through some of the songs at the woolpack 6pm-6.45pm (if you can make it) then walking to the rugby club for 7pm. on stage between 8pm and 8.30pm and we will play about an hour. please make sure you are at the rugby club for 8pm AT THE LATEST. if you have your OUO t-shirt then please wear that if not then something blue/white on the top half would be cool.

i can’t wait for FRIDAY!

final thought for the day…… F#dim! my new favourite chord!

elvis, sparklers, cake and abba – a typical night with the otley ukulele orchestra!

i have to admit that i expected a quieter than normal session last night….but as it turns out it wasn’t just me who would rather play the ukulele in the warm than stand in the cold and coo at fireworks. that said – i at least wanted a sparkler so we marked the half way point in the forecourt at the woolpack with sparklers for all! it was fun and no one burnt any fingers so we could crack on with some playing for the last hour!

we covered lots of songs yesterday including 2 newies –

HOUND DOG – elvis presley. everyone attempted the riff too and it sounded so cool!!

MAMMA MIA – we looked at this in the second session as it has a few riff sections to it (MAMMA MIA TAB) but by the end of the evening it sounded really good….i wondered how well abba would go down but it’s a great pop tune with a catchy melody and nice chord changes – it was bound to sound even better played by us! 😉

we also looked at these songs throughout the session

THE HOUSE OF THE RISING SUNQUE SERA SERAI Walk the Line (amended) and WILD MOUNTAIN THYME lyrics and chords

keep practising!

so the next event for us to think about is the OTLEY BEER FESTIVAL on FRIDAY 16th NOVEMBER. time to be confirmed (hopefully by next week). i will put a set list together so we can run it next monday.

PS – picture of abba for you….note white jumpsuits/ thigh high boots….this will be your stage outfit at the otley beer festival. we set the trends round here!
