Everyone is welcome to come and join in the fun of this event – even if you only know 3 chords! It was such a laugh last year so the more the merrier. Don’t forget to tell everyone about it!

COMING UP

Haworth Ukulele Group Extravaganza – Saturday 28th June

OUO will be appearing in the afternoon and again in the evening for the open mic session. I will be getting names for this on Monday! Should be a lovely day out for us all. Transport can be arranged.

Tealbeck – Monday 30th June

We’ll be playing for the residents at Tealbeck instead of our first session. Everyone is welcome to come and join in. It’s a lovely ‘first gig’ experience too if you’re a little apprehensive about performing…

More details about July will be appearing shortly… there is a lot to keep us busy that’s for sure!

We had a really busy weekend of OUO activity!

On Saturday we drove over to Rowntree Park in York to help entertain the Environment Agency at their Summer Fair. It was a glorious afternoon and we played lots of songs for them as they soaked up the rays. It was really good fun. Thank you to everyone who came to play. It was just a shame i didn’t get a go on the bouncy castle! Here are some photographic highlights…

songs you never thought you would hear on a ukulele….but actually sound GREAT!

one of the things i wanted for our orchestra when it started was to do songs we all know and love that you might not a) expect to hear on a ukulele or b) have the guts to perform if it was just yourself on say a guitar or playing the piano. but there are so many great songs in the world – and some of the ones we have picked to work on as a group just make me smile from ear to ear as soon as we start playing them. i hope it has the same effect for people listening too!

of course we have been looking at our christmas songs over the past couple of weeks so thought i would just do the shortcuts to the music here so if you missed the session you can catch up.

CHRISTMAS SONGS (4 in total):

BLUE CHRISTMAS

Last Christmas TAB

ALL I WANT FOR CHRISTMAS IS YOU + All I Want for Christmas intro tab

these are not my arrangements Ukulele Christmas Song Book but in here you will find the chords and lyrics for LAST CHRISTMAS and I WISH IT COULD BE CHRISTMAS EVERYDAY

we also looked at the songs for Teal Beck Residential Home (Monday 10th December – meet at woolpack 6pm or teal beck 6.30pm)

SENTIMENTAL JOURNEY

HOUND DOG

QUE SERA SERA

WE’LL MEET AGAIN

we’ll be playing for 30 minutes maximum so the other songs will be decided on monday.

ONE LAST THING!

for our up and coming performance at the courthouse (17th december) we will be joining forces with the OTLEY A CAPPELLA choir to sing this bing crosby and the andrew sisters song

we are doing a slightly different arrangement….have a listen to my demo version here

Mele Kalikimaka 3 part harmony with ukulele

sheet music to follow!!

remember the dates coming up

sunday 9th december – victorian christmas fayre/woolpack open day 2.30pm (1 hour max)

monday 10th december – teal beck residential home 6.30pm (30 mins)

saturday 15th december – sela bar leeds (time tbc probably around 7pm – 1 hour max)

monday 17th december – woolpack christmas show @ the courthouse from 7pm-10pm we will probably play for 45 mins and will be our last get together of 2012!!!!

Ukulele Dreams

i woke up this morning after a bizarre ukulele-related dream and googled the cost of flights to hawaii. yes, i have ukulele dreams at the moment. and no, i can’t afford to fly even a quarter of the way to hawaii! one day…..!

Image

then i thought i still haven’t posted link to ALOHA OE for you to practise to! so here it is ALOHA OE MP3 no excuses for monday!!

So hopefully see some of you on monday and if it is a nice evening again it will be ukulele orchestra al fresco and maybe a refreshing pint afterwards

Week 11 (23.07.12) hello sunshine!

nothing like a little bit of sunshine to keep the great mood going from the gig yesterday (it was so cool – photos to follow!). but i wish i had taken a picture of us all playing together outside tonight in the courtyard as it was such a lovely evening.

when i was thinking about starting to learn a new song, i knew it had to be something lovely, something different but a little bit challenging . naturally i went for  a traditional hawaiian song! you all know “aloha oe”…but do you know anything about it? i didn’t until today….

meet queen liliuokalani (born sept. 2, 1838, honolulu, hawaii —died nov. 11, 1917, honolulu). she was the first and only reigning hawaiian queen and the last hawaiian sovereign to govern the islands, which were annexed by the US in 1898. queen liliuokalani was head of the Oni pa’a “stand firm” movement, whose motto was “hawaii for the hawaiians.” despite her fight against annexation of the islands by the US, annexation occurred in July 1898 – the same year that she composed “aloha oe,” on the ukulele, a song synonymous with the islands ever since.

ok history lesson over…. “aloha oe” is a beautiful song. the traditional swung strum pattern is a difficult one to master as you need to mute the strings with your palm. however, by the end of the hour we were sounding pretty on it! we also looked at the tab (the ukulele’s playing the melody) in a lot of detail. i want people to lose their fear of tab and notation…so i have tried to present it in the most non-threatening way possible. you can find music from tonight here ALOHA OE.

i found music theory really difficult at school and it totally put me off. but there is no denying it makes more sense than the tab i have written previously. like i said this evening…it is worth putting the time in as it can only get easier and easier the more we do together.

audio/video to follow!

see you next week
