Otley Beer Festival 2016

We’re very excited to be performing at this year’s Otley Beer Festival! We’ll be just one of the many local musical acts to be gracing the stage this year… so why not make a weekend of it and come and join us!

We’ll be playing from 6pm-8pm on Saturday 19th November at Otley Rugby Club on Pool Road. Entry is £3 which includes commemorative glass. OBF raises money for local charities too so everyone is a winner!

17th November 2014

Hello my ukulele friends!

Just a quick update on what has been happening in Ukulele world…

We had several sessions recently when our room here at The Woolpack was bursting at the seams. But things are more comfortable now we have started out daytime ukulele and guitar social club on a Wednesday morning. There are now seats spare so hopefully you will find the session less cramped and more fun!
The Woolpack Music Social Club runs 10:30am -12:30pm every Wednesday morning and includes time for tea, biscuits and chatting! Check out http://www.woolpackmusicsocialclub.wordpress.com for the music we are working on.

We had a great time playing at Otley Beer Festival last week and had a great response from the crowd! There was lots of people singing along which we love! Hopefully there will be a bigger stage next year…! Huge thanks to Paul Briscoe for inviting us to play again.

NOVEMBER news!

We had an amazing time at The Cheerful Chilli on Friday celebrating our 3rd SPOOKULELE event. It was amazing to see all the effort players and audience members had put into getting dressed up for the occasion. The Cheerful Chilli put on a fantastic spread of food and we sang, strummed and danced until our feet hurt!

Here are a couple of photos… there will be more to follow! If you have any please send to jen@bighooha.co.uk

MONEY THAT’S WHAT I WANT

LAST CHRISTMAS – L+C

REET PETITE L+C

REET PETITE TAB

and then in the second session…

GET LUCKY (OUO)

WAR IS OVER UKE

a little word about this song. it is not as hard as it looks! It uses chords you know G, Am, C, D, Dm and F. There are also SUSPENDED (sus) versions of these chords

***warning! technical bit!***

sus chords replace one of the notes in the major chord (usually the major or minor third) with either a perfect fourth (sus4) or a major second (sus2). The lack of a minor or a major third in the chord creates movement and a tension that wants to be resolved by going back to the more familiar major or minor chord.

basically one note in the chord changes to create feeling and movement in the song.

In war is over – you are only moving one note at a time to create the sus sound. You will only ever change the note on ONE STRING AT A TIME per chord – for example G – you will only change the position of your fingers on the A string (2nd fret, 0 open string, 3rd fret, back to 2nd fret). don’t get bogged down with having to learn the names of the chords… listen to the movement of the song and get a sense of the order in which you are adding and taking away the notes. I will put up a recording of this section ASAP for you to practise to.

then we finished off the session with…

MAMMA MIA APR13

MAMMA MIA TAB

HERE IS THE SET LIST FOR SATURDAY!

any questions, queries, comments always welcome!

an eventful week….

i don’t know about everyone else but my fingers are only just recovering from friday’s gig and then monday’s 2hrsession of exciting playing!

i really want to say a HUGE thank you to everyone who played on friday at the beer festival – i was so happy that so many of you turned up to play and just know that the audience thought we were brilliant. there were so many smily faces singing along!

we all know the sound issues our little ukes have and we struggled to hear ourselves on stage let alone be heard by the audience! the important bit is that we battled through the noise, sweat, cramped conditions and performed like our lives depended on it! i really believe that we can build a great reputation on gigs like that and hope we can do more in the future. every gig is a learning experience – we can only go from strength to strength with all the dedication and hard work that you put in…

so to monday!

we had a lovely evening looking at songs for the up and coming events….

sunday 9th december –  otley victorian fayre

monday 10th december – teal beck residential home

monday 17th december – the woolpack christmas party at the courthouse

saturday 15th december – the sela bar, leeds city centre

we looked at these christmas favourites….

BLUE CHRISTMAS,

ALL I WANT FOR CHRISTMAS IS YOU (All I Want for Christmas intro tab),

and from the Ukulele Christmas Song Book (not my arrangements) we did LAST CHRISTMAS (find the tab i wrote for it here…..Last Christmas TAB) and I WISH IT COULD BE CHRISTMAS EVERYDAY (it had a few mistakes on it so we changed the chord order slightly – but play through it you will get the idea)

then we practised songs the residents from teal beck have requested …

WE’LL MEET AGAIN

SENTIMENTAL JOURNEY

QUE SERA SERA

keep playing and see you very soon!

what’s your favourite…..?!

i don’t know about anyone else but i thought that was a pretty intense (but awesome as always!) ukulele session this evening! we rattled through the songs and there was a lot to take in with the new chords, new songs and then in the second session, preparing for the gig on friday!

we spent some time tonight in the first session looking at a couple of newies…..

WE’LL MEET AGAIN – some lovely chord changes although some new ones to learn

BLUE CHRISTMAS – first christmas song of the season!

and we also revisited HOUND DOG from last week, then EIGHT DAYS A WEEK and I’m a Believer

in the second session we concentrated on the songs for friday. we are really excited about playing at the otley beer festival – hopefully there will be some samples left for us when we have finished 😀 !

check out the SET LIST FOR FRIDAY 16th NOVEMBER and download/email me if you need any info or print outs etc.

we will be meeting and having a run through some of the songs at the woolpack 6pm-6.45pm (if you can make it) then walking to the rugby club for 7pm. on stage between 8pm and 8.30pm and we will play about an hour. please make sure you are at the rugby club for 8pm AT THE LATEST. if you have your OUO t-shirt then please wear that if not then something blue/white on the top half would be cool.

i can’t wait for FRIDAY!

final thought for the day…… F#dim! my new favourite chord!

x
